At First Steps Cornwall, our Nature Steps preschool class offers a unique opportunity for children to engage with the natural world in a hands-on, purposeful way. This program fosters curiosity, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the environment, helping our little ones become confident explorers.

Purposeful Tools for Exploration

In Nature Steps, children use various tools to enhance their learning experience. Each week, we introduce age-appropriate resources, from magnifying glasses to small gardening tools. Recently, during a fun project, children crafted their own windmills, using materials that required careful work with hammers and secateurs. This not only built their motor skills but also introduced them to the safe and responsible use of tools.

Learning Through Hands-On Activities

Our outdoor classroom is a vibrant space where children can dig in the soil, examine plants, and observe insects up close. Guided activities teach them about ecosystems, the lifecycle of plants, and the role of different creatures in our environment. Making windmills (linking to a literacy project – ‘The Little Red Hen’ and using tools like hammers and secateurs allowed them to connect theoretical knowledge with practical experience, showcasing how wind energy can be harnessed and how plants can be cultivated.

Collaboration and Community

Collaboration is a key aspect of Nature Steps. Children work together on projects, sharing tools and ideas as they explore. This teamwork builds social skills and instills a sense of community and respect for one another and the environment.
